RAWSON LAKE

A short jaunt up the mountain side.

Story by Julian Bialowas October 13th, 2014

OLD TRAIL, NEW FRIENDS

I’ve been trying to get out to the mountains with Chris Amat for close to a year now. But every time I passed through town our schedules never quite aligned. This past weekend we finally made it happen. I suggested a trail and he rounded up a crew of photographers to hit said trail.

I decided we should tackle the hike to Rawson Lake. A quick and easy 4km trail that starts at the gorgeous Upper Kananaskis Lake and gradually takes you up through the trees to a bowl where Rawson lays.

Allison, Alix, Ernest, Brittany, and Vian answered Chris’ call to join us. Shenanigans ensued.

In typical Alberta fashion, we were rained on, snowed on, sleeted on, and occasionally given magical light on the way up the mountain side.

We were at the lake in about 45 minutes. Upon arrival it was engulfed in clouds and as usual, it did not disappoint.

But we weren’t done yet. The ridge on the south end of the lake was calling our name. Ernest, Vian, and I threw our cameras in our bags and scrambled up the ridge. (#hikefurther right?)

I’m so very glad we did, because the views from above were phenomenal.

We made our way back down and enjoyed some fine cheeses and pita bread by the lake courtesy of Ernest.

And then Vian and I hiked further a little more (can’t stop, won’t stop) up one more ridge while the gang picnicked away.

Finally, we snapped some more pictures, fell into the lake, and made our way down to the cars. Beers and burgers in Canmore followed. Can’t wait to hang with this group again, there was never a dull moment.

Get out there. Adventure only starts once you leave the pavement.
